abc 7 news. >> most notable part of this report is what's not in it. >> california senator dianne feinstein lashing out at the fbi's report into the kavanaugh sexual assault allegations, calling that report incomplete and saying the white house is to blame. good afternoon. thanks for joins. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama daetz. the white house said senate republicans are feeling vindicated today, saying the fbi's latest background check found no corroborating evidence of the allegations made by palo alto college professor christine blasey ford. >> well, the facts do not support the allegations levied at judge kavanaugh's character. instead, many of the fax actually support judge kavanaugh's strong, unequivocal denial. >> the senate inched closer to a decision on the nomion for a faln tund lel as shamefuls

by democrats. the report set thousand them packed the hart senate office building today. many were taken away by police. >> hey hey, ho ho, kavanaugh has got to go! >> kavanaugh's fate is now in the hands of four senators, three republicans and one democrat. republicans feel confident they have the votes after both maine's susan collins and arizona's jeff flake said the fbi investigation appears to have been very thorough. >> one of supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh's college roommates at yale university says he was not interviewed by the fbi. he came here to the abc 7 studios to share his experience with kavanaugh. here is abc 7 news anchor jessica castro. >> james roche was one of brett kavanaugh's college roommates at yale university in 1983. he dispute what's the supreme court nominee told a senate judicial committee last week.

roche says his strongest memory of kavanaugh his freshman year was his drinking. >> brett stood out for his drinking. people drank a lot then. i drank aaiamountthen.the other drank a fair amount then. but brett's drinking was unusual. >> roche was surprised to hear his former roommate testify he was a moderate drinker. >> i couldn't believe what i was hearing. i would be in that room and he would come down and he was slurring and he was yelling and making loud noises. yeah, very drunk. >> roche told abc 7 news he knew debbie ramirez, a fellow yale student who became the second woman to accuse kavanaugh of sexual misconduct. roche says he believes her allegations. >> i believe debbie, because i can't imagine debbie lying. it's just not who she was at that time. and i don't think it's who she is now. >> but roche points out he never personally saw kavanaugh become violent. >> no, i never saw him hit

anybody. i never saw himat a woman. i think that's important to say out loud. i don't know that he did or he didn't, but i never saw that. what i saw was a person who drank a lot and when he drank a lot he started to behave in a belligerent way. >> and check out this banner that was hanging on yerba buena island this morning. people driving into san francisco saw the large sign that said we believe survivors, an obvious reference to the kavanaugh controversy. the sign was removed a short time later. now let's head to abc 7 newts reporter chris nguyen who is live in palo alto where community reaction is very strong. chris? >> well, people on both sides are pretty upset with how all this played out. but here in palo alto, regardless of whatever happens with the vote, supporters of dr. blasey ford says she will be forever considered a hero. as many of us await the outcome of the brett kavanaugh vote, some residents in palo alto, the hometown of christine blasey

ford, say this is just the beginning of changes to come. >> no woman would come forward with this story and disrupt her entire life if it wasn't the truth and her civic duty. >> across the country, more than 1700 law professors have signed a letter urging the senate to deny judge kavanaugh's confirmation, saying he displayed a lack of judicil temperament during his hearing last week that would be disqualifying for the court. 21 are from santa clara's school of law. >> it's dangerous in our judicial system, because someone coming in and watching that judge will always wonder whether revenge or vengeance or retaliation will be part of that judge's thinking. >> with the fbi investigation now complete, some are now calling on the white house to release its directive to the agency so the public can know if the agents faced any restrictions when they started their investigation. palo alto mayor liz ness, herself a survivor of sexual

workplace safety and job security. marriott says the strike is disappointing, but the hotels will remain open. 200 workers also walked hotn downtown san jose. members of the unite local 19 say they shouldn't have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet. un >> usats gngo he confron now. and they had to talk to us. >> fernandez says workers and union leaders understand innovation is inevitable, but he says those on strike deserve to know how marriott's decisions are going to impact their lives. a new state law hopes to create a conservatorship program focused on providing houses and social services for homeless people who really can't care for themselves. it seems hard to believe, but the homeless population in san francisco has actually dropped, according to lless census, there were 4,82 last

year. it says 7500. >> but for in the homeless problem appears to be growing. opponents say there aren't enough resources to care for those who want the assistance. abc 7 news reporter carlos salcedo is live at the civic center with the details. carlos? >> while we know homelessness is help themsels.elsness onan l the streets of san francisco have become a far too common sight, a dire situation city leaders say they're tackling head-on. >> i think it is a shame and a travesty for this city is that when people come to san francisco they see we do not take care of our sick people. >> city and county leaders including mayor london breed were at the community center this morning speaking on how their addressing chronic homelessness. one big help they say is a new law that creates conservatorship

for people with severe mental health and substance abuse disorders. >> we're not just trying to force someone into a situation. this is about helping people get healthy and stabilized. >> the law makes it easier for judges to allow a guardian or protector to make decisions foro making resns therent corip nesr peop wg addiction. >> the law requires government agencies to provide adequate housing and support services, already in short supply. one main reason is there aren't enough shelter beds. >> our big problem with this is that we don't have voluntary services available, and that we believe that people should have access to services that they want before they are forced into services. >> despite the challenges, city leaders say they're moving forward. and it is up to the board of

ama was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse. i just heard the sound as i was driving over the bay bridge. what was that? abc 7 news was at san francisco city hall. we saw them soaring over the city as they get ready for their fleet week shows. there are three shows starting tomorrow at noon. >> eric thomas sat crissy field, one of the top spots for taking in the spectacles. hey, eric. >> larry, i don't know if you can hear that, but you can make out maybe the last echoes. they've just flown over above the clouds. so we can't quite see them now. we were told they were going to have a practice action at about 3:45. didn't see them. saw fat albert flying around. you just heard the roar go over. and people, they're not doing anything. they're waiting for the planes to fly over again. even before you see them, you know the blue angels are nearby. nothing sounds quite as impressive as a quartet of jet

fighters passing overhead. >> i think it's just stunning the precision and also the sound. >> it's exciting to hear them and to see them, and like you mentioned, the formation. so close proximity. >> how close? >> in the diamond, as close as 18 inches wing to canopy preparation. that's a lot of practice, a lot of work. it's a lot of trust. >> at 400 miles an hour, that's an understatement. lieutenant commander damon cruzu flies number two. he is a fremont native and is excited about performing in front of the home crowd. >> i grew up coming here, watching the blue angels almost every year from fort point. it was part of what inspired me to want to serve my country and fly navy air aircraft. >> these f/18 hornets are among the old nest the fleet and that requires extra maintenance. she helps keep them flying.

she remembers seeing them perform at 2010 fleet week and decided to join the navy shortly afterwards. >> being here is overwhelming to me. it brings me back. being here now seven, eight years later. it's an overwhelming experience. >> you know what brings me back? 14 years ago when i got to fly in the back seat of one of those. was there a cleanup involved afterwards? yes, a small one. breakfast was -- well, breakfast. but i tell you what, it's incredible to see these six guys flying around here at incredible speeds and doing what they do. it takes so much precision and so much practice. it's just a whole lot of fun. and that's what folks are going to have the next couple days, a whole lot of fun. >> and i know you're geeking out, this is right up your alley, more than the average person. >> loves planes. >> so we know crissy field is a great spot to watch it. but what are some of the other good places to see the blue angels? >> well, you know, earlier, when

they had sort of a fly-around to look at the landmarks around here we saw them pretty well from the embarcadero. but as a general rule, aquatic park is a great place. the hill above fort mason is a great place. but if you want to know the absolute best place to watch from, it is a boat out in the bay. if you don't have access to one of those place, crissy field, to the north of alcatraz, great viewing areas. >> find a friend with a nice yauchlt. >> yes. >> thank you, eric. >> that's great that spencer christian will be up in a second or two. fleet week kicks into high gear tomorrow. the ship parade at 11. and the blue angels, they generally are up and flying around 3:00 in the afternoon. also air shows at the same time saturday and sunday. just a sampling of what fleet week has to offer. you want the full list of events. there is a ton of stuff going on.

go to our website, abc7news.com. >> a lot of fun. a south bay nonprofit supported by colin kaepernick and kevin durant is getting a huge boost. >> the co-founder has won $625,000, one of 25 winners of the mcarthur foundation genius grants. kristen sze is here with that story. >> you first probably heard about d bug through colin kaepernick. he made it the first recipient of his $1 million pledge for organization working to support social justice. or maybe you heard it through the many times abc 7 news has interviewed its co-founder as part of local police interaction and criminal justice stories. he started debug in 2001 after noting that minorities are disproportionately arrested in san jose. since then he turned into it a reform movement that gives voice to low income people facing incarceration, while helping them with their own defense. >> we decided to be irreverent

to this idea that only lawyers can make changes in the courts. what we developed was a way to layer the criminal justice system with the power of community organizing. i the method is called participatory defense. families meet weekly to discuss their cases with pierce and experts. sometimes they win reduced sentence or even get their cases overturned. they now hold training workshops across the country. he is holding one in seattle where he told me he is humbled to be select as part of this group of 25 extraordinary individuals. he gets 625,000 dollars, over five years to spend however he sees fit. >> larry and ama? >> awesome. >> a natural transition from one genius to another. >> i like that. by the way, i don't have a yacht. i downsized. i just have a raft now. >> a dinghy. >> a dinghy. >> spencer's dinghy. >> here is a look at live doppler. the weather is getting clearer.

the skies are getting clearer despite the lingering clouds and flecks of moisture. camera looking at clouds over the bay. and these are our forecast features. it will be turning mostly clear overnight with bright blue skies for the blue angels tomorrow, and a sunny and warmer three-day weekend is coming our way. so fleet week weekend is going to be awesome. overnight, look for clouds sort of clearing out, so to speak. overnight lows will be quite a bit cooler than they have been of late. upper 40s in the north bay valleys. low to mid-50s just about everywhere else. we're going to feel that loss of the humidity that has been hanging around the last few days. tomorrow look for highs ranging from low 60s at the coast to mainly low 70s right around the bay shoreline. and we'll see upper 70s in the inland areas as skies will be mostly sunny. and that brings us to fleet week in san francisco this weekend. blue angels will be putting on the air show from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. tomorrow, saturday, and sunday under sunny skies

here in the city we'll see temperatures tomorrow in the mid-60s, upper 60s on saturday, and around 70 degrees on sunday. and the high temperature trend for bay area over the three-day weekend saturday, sunday and of course monday, columbus day, looks like this. we'll see a warming pattern with inland highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. right around the bay, we'll see some low 70s and some low to mid 60s on the coast. sunday, quite a bit warmer with mid 80s in the warmest inland locations, and some upper 70s around the bay shoreline and mid- to upper 60s on the coast. and that same pattern holds on monday, columbus day. virtually no change in that pattern. we'll see some mid 80s in the warmest inland spots. mid- to upper 70s around the bay and mid 60s on the coast. so here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. it begins warming up, gets a little milder tomorrow. doesn't get very warm. just sunnier and dryer. the warming truly begins on saturday. and then as i mentioned, sunday and monday, pretty much the same

temperature range. mid-80s inland. upper 70s around the bay. mid-60s on the coast. then it turns sharply cooler inland with little change on tuesday. tuesday, wednesday, don't look for highs above 80, about 75, 80 degrees. 75 to 78 degrees on tuesday and wednesday inland. and finally on thursday, temperatures will rise up to about 80 degrees again in our inland areas. looks like a great forecast, especially over the weekend there is a lot going on. fleet week and strictly bluegrass, all kinds of stuff. >> lots. >> thank you. >> okay. a special anniversary today for pier 39, and it's about more than just the sea lions outside the tourist attraction. october is bullying prevention month. coming up, the new technology that helps you track

picture, theioopn oco. taking pictures. it is 40 years old today. >> about time, apparently. >> the sea lions don't seem too excited about the anniversary. the pier attract morse than 10 million visitors from all over the world every year. it's home to dozens of shops and restaurants as well as the aquarium at the bay and plenty of other attractions. a big birthday celebration is planned for saturday, october 13th. major change coming to thet. santa monica-based bird, their scooters, they say they will soon allow users to request to have one of their scooters delivered to your home or office. the scooters would be delivered by 8:00 in the morning, allowing a rider to use it throughout the day. no word on how much the service might be. bird was not one of the two companies granted a permit to operate in san francisco. good news for surfers. united airlines is wiping out its service fee on surfboards.

allegations against judge kavanaugh. >> it looks to be a product of an incomplete investigation. >> with strong partisan lines drawn on kavanaugh -- >> enough, enough already. let's vote. >> the whole thing is a sham. five days to do the investigation. >> potential swing voter, jeff flake and susan collins appear to be satisfied with the report. >> a very thorough and no new corroborative information came out. >> the report contains summaries from introduerviews and witness. democrats blasted the fact that judge kavanaugh, who has denied the allegations against him and his first accuser dr. christine blasey ford were not interviewed. >> why not tell the white house to green light the interview to interview these additional witnesses? >> the fbi has gotten all the -- all the permission they need in order to interview whoever they think is necessary. >> the white house confident the president's nominee will be confirmed. >> as we've talked to a number

of senators and will continue to do so until the vote takes place. >> and a vote could happen this weekend. attorneys for blasey ford sent a very angry letter to the fbi director christopher wray expressing disappointment, saying that she was prepared and ready to turn over medical records and other corroborating evidence. ama? >> and kenneth, a retired supreme court justice has commented on the kavanaugh hearings. what did he say? >> ama, quite incredible. we are hearing from 98-year-old former supreme court justice john paul stevens, a life-long republican who praised kavanaugh in the past, but he said he watched that confirmation hearing last week between christine blasey ford and judge kavanaugh, and he said that judge kavanaugh disqualified himself with the confrontational and partisan tone of that hearing. ama, he says that kavanaugh does not belong on the high court. >> very interesting. kenneth moten live from washington, d.c. thank you, kenneth. a small group of women took aim at a bay area financial

giant today, claiming his donations san francisco headquarters of charles schwab. they're angry at what they say are nearly $2 million in donations by schwab to republicans in light of the battle over supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. >> i feel the way survivors are being fwrietd the republican party is horrifying. i feel they are silencing the voices of women. they're disrespecting survivors. we had our president on national tv mocking dr. ford. >> the demonstrators called on schwab to drop all financial support for the republican party. in a statement to abc 7 news, charles schwab said in part we believe in every employee's right to contribute to the democratic process as they see fit in accordance with their own beliefs. our chairman's political activities are his own and separate from the charles schwab corporation and subsidiaries. accusing a russian intelligence unit of new

cybercrimes. the justice department unsealed a 41-page grand jury indictment that charges seven gru intelligence officer. they're accused of hacking into computers associated with 250 athletes and anti-doping sports organizations. >> russia cheated. they cheated. they got caught. they were banned from the olympics. they were mad, and they retaliated. and in retaliating, they broke the law. >> the indictment also accuses the russians of hacking organizations investigating russia's use of chemical weapons. the charges include computer hacking, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and moneylaundering. now to the latest on the ricin scare. the fbi arrested the man they say mailed envelopes that were initially believed to contain the deadly poison to the pentagon and the white house. >> nobody was injured by the potential threat is being taken seriously. marci gonzalez with the latest developments.

>> this suspect now under arrest, accused of sending envelopes containing castor beans used to make the deadly poison ricin to president trump. defense secretary mattis, and the head of the navy, john richardson. the letters all intercepted before reaching their recipients. >> no wider threat to public safety exists at this time. as a pending matter, that's all we can say. >> william clyde allen iii who served in the navy from 1998 until 2000 now facing a threat of terrorism charge. federal agents in tactical gear swarming his home in logan, utah, north of salt lake city, led there in part according to an official familiar with the investigation by a return address found on one of the suspicious envelopes mailed to the white house and pentagon. >> these cases are usually easy to solve because people who put substances like this in the mail aren't very sophisticated. >> allen is being held without bond. he has not yet entered a plea.

teens and young adults say cyberbullying is a social problem. nearly 50% of young people and their parents agree, social media is having a mostly negative effect on the younger generation. mostly 3/4 of 15 to 26-year-olds polled say online bull leg and abuse is a serious problem for their pierce. the poll is conducted by the associated press and orc center for public research and mtv. there is a brand-new app to help parents. >> beckley worley has a closer look at how you can protect your
